GIF:
The GIF specification was created by Compuserve Information Services
and was initially designed to be a platform independent graphic format.
Since the file would have to be transmitted via very slow modems,
it was designed to yield small files.
The GIF file format creates very small files which makes them ideal
for logos, buttons and other general web graphics. Its only major
restriction is the 256 color palette. In general, GIF should be the
default file format, unless a specific feature offered by the other
formats is necessary.
JPG: The JPG specification was created by a joint
group of experts that have been nominated to a standards committee.
Therefore, JPG in itself is not a file format, but an image coding
standard. The version of JPG that is used on the web is actually a
JFIF (JPG File Interchange Format), but due to its popularity, it
is commonly known as JPG. Therefore, JPG and JFIF can usually be used
interchangeably in the context of the world wide web.
The main benefit of JPG is its support for full 24-bit color and powerful
compression scheme. This combination makes JPG best suited for photographs
(color and grayscale) and images with continuous tone, e.g., gradients.
Due to the lossy compression scheme, as the image is compressed, distortions
in the image appear. This makes JPG bad for images with text and hard
edges.
