BMP:
Windows bitmap files are stored in a device-independent bitmap (DIB)
format that allows Windows to display the bitmap on any type of display
device. The term "device independent" means that the bitmap
specifies pixel color in a form independent of the method used by
a display to represent color. The default filename extension of a
Windows DIB file is .BMP.
JPG: The JPG specification was created by a joint
group of experts that have been nominated to a standards committee.
Therefore, JPG in itself is not a file format, but an image coding
standard. The version of JPG that is used on the web is actually a
JFIF (JPG File Interchange Format), but due to its popularity, it
is commonly known as JPG. Therefore, JPG and JFIF can usually be used
interchangeably in the context of the world wide web.
The main benefit of JPG is its support for full 24-bit color and powerful
compression scheme. This combination makes JPG best suited for photographs
(color and grayscale) and images with continuous tone, e.g., gradients.
Due to the lossy compression scheme, as the image is compressed, distortions
in the image appear. This makes JPG bad for images with text and hard
edges.
